Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
What does „KV“ means in
symphonies‘ classifications?
It is indeed a register for all the compositions of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), not only the symphonies. K stands for Köchel, the last name of Austrian publisher and collector Ludwig Alois Ferdinand Ritter von Knöchel (1800-1877). V stands for Verzeichnis, meaning register of list, catalog as you like.
Knöchel made the first relevant catalog of Mozart´s compositions, known as the „K“-number, first published 1862. That first catalog was not complete, but this is another question and the name for the list of works has been retained by later researchers of Mozart. Therefore, KV is, indeed unique to Mozart.

There are many other catalogues other than KV and BWV, like SWV for Schütz, RV for Vivaldi, BuxWV for Buxtehude, WoO for Beethoven, etc. Most of the major composers who did not catalogue their own works through opus numbers, or left some of their works without an opus numbers, have alternative catalogues done by music historians.
